WIMBLEDON, England — The all-killer no-filler Wimbledon draw ceremony happened on Friday morning. With minimal preamble or prattling, each of the 256 players was placed into the women’s and men’s singles brackets, one at a time.

The most awaited chip—No. 128 Serena Williams—was slotted onto a favorable line. Other times, the rough luck of the draw drew gasps from the crowd of media gathered in the main interview room.
