A new way of measuring how a tiny country like Monaco suddenly stacks up on the world stage of tennis.
Valentin Vacherot was the fairytale story of men’s tennis last year, winning ATP 1000 Shanghai ranked 204th, and beating his cousin Arthur Rinderknech in an improbably familial final.
Vacherot’s run in Shanghai came truly out of nowhere, but in my interviewing him and in my writing here, I wanted to focus on the very real, very small place he actually came from: Monaco.
