I'm not sure I'd call it "hemming and hawing." I took your exchange last week as strongly implying that she intended to do it, and just messing around because she wasn't ready to announce it.

As for why she waited until the last possible moment--literally after the qualifying draw was made, making it was pretty clear some Williams must have accepted the WC because all other prime candidates would now be in qualifying--my best guess is that the news cycle around a 44 year-old withdrawing from a singles slam draw she got a wildcard into would be insufferable.

So she wanted to get her warmup matches out of the way and as much practice, so that if there were any physical setback forcing her to change plans, she could do it before the announcement.

We are here at the cusp of Wimbledon, two weeks of grassy grit to grandeur. No one collapses in victory better than Serena! Am I expecting that? No, just a really pleasant memory.

I think Ben captures the right tone of Serena’s various statements and stories, and then adds speculation and interpretation that makes sense. Hey, we’re here for the ride, and it’s going to be a wild, rocky one!! Her family is here, and now her daughters, too. I think this dimension has always been special. I’m here for Serena. And Olympia and Adira!!! 🫶🏽🎾👸🏾
