A Shining Moment in Gold
Naomi Osaka dazzled brightly in Paris, and her opponent made her feelings clear.
PARIS, France — Before getting to today’s main action—which is about Naomi Osaka’s show-stopping sparkle—I must again begin a daily dispatch from Roland Garros with another grand merci to everyone who has subscribed to Bounces in recent days here.
The most recent numbers were even bigger than a day before—and definitely the biggest single day Bounces has had, in terms of new paid subscribers, so far this year. Bounces took the top spot on the 24-hour Substack Sports chart for just the second time ever. It’s a treat and delight to be in the gold medal spot, even if only for a day, especially since gold was the theme at Roland Garros on the day.
Really, I could sense it was coming, given how frequently my phone has been buzzing here lately, which it does every time a new subscriber signs up. Even though I’m in my second year of doing Bounces (and at Roland Garros for the ninth time)1, I still do get a genuine thrill every time I see that someone new buys into what I’m doing here enough to show their support and keep me and Bounces going and growing.
A reminder again that a 15 percent discount (which has motivated lots of folks to upgrade so far) will be running through the rest of this French Open, but will end when it ends.
Today, subscribers get more on Naomi Osaka’s spectacularly scintillating showpiece from her first round match, and the real story of what her opponent Laura Siegemund thought and said about it (since I have seen some misleading versions already circulating).
To read the rest, and the previews of the best matches to watch on Wednesday, please subscribe to Bounces! -Ben
