Iga Swiatek and Ben Shelton each delivered dominant displays in Thursday evening’s finals in Canada, putting wobbly seasons back on track toward big prospects for the rest of this North American summer hard-court swing.

Swiatek rebounded and then, within moments of match point in Toronto, slapped back at an 86-year-old critic, still seething over recent remarks.

“I feel a little bit, even, angry right now. I think that’s the first time in my life I’ve [felt] something like that after a victory.” —Iga Swiatek

Shelton, more joyfully, repeated as champion in Montreal, with loud, happy noises throughout, adding a big high to a roller-coaster season.
